Torrential rain has transformed southeastern Texas into a watery labyrinth, leaving Houston and its surroundings paralyzed. In the past 24 hours, more than 9 inches of rain have hammered the region, triggering a deluge that has forced schools to close and inundated countless highways.

Flood Warnings Echo

The National Weather Service has issued a dire flood warning for the region, extending until Tuesday. A flash flood warning was also in force on Friday morning, amplifying concerns along the swollen San Jacinto River. The river is forecast to continue its ascent, as additional rainfall and controlled water release from an overflowing reservoir surge into its banks.

Evacuations Ordered, Lives at Stake

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has sounded the alarm, issuing a mandatory evacuation order for residents living along the river's path. "This is a life-threatening situation," Hidalgo cautioned. As of Friday morning, the river had reached 66.2 feet, with projections indicating a crest of 76.6 feet by Saturday. The river's flood stage is 58 feet. Hidalgo urged those along the river in southern county areas to evacuate immediately, warning that they could become stranded for an extended period if they remain.

While no casualties have been reported, the floodwaters have necessitated numerous rescues. In Conroe, just north of Houston, rescuers navigated boats into submerged neighborhoods, rescuing trapped residents and their beloved pets. Water levels have risen to alarming heights in Livingston, northeast of Conroe, engulfing moving vans and seeping into buildings.
